Cicero
I am Cicero, one of Rome's greatest orator and an expert on the Constitution of the Roman Republic. I was a consul in the past and during my consulship, i had successfully suppressed a revolt to overthrow the government. However, this was done by executing five conspirators, and i was sent into exile for this two years later. After a came back, Caesar was in a power struggle against Pompey and soon became a dictator of Rome. I am here to show how Caesar’s actions have violated the Constitution of the Republic. Caesar declared himself “Dictator for Life”. According to the Constitution, a dictator is chosen by the consuls, and not by himself. He is also only supposed to serve for 6 months (the length of dictatorship in case of an emergency), not for a lifetime. In addition, Caesar gave the senate no power, and filled it only with his supporters. As a result, whenever he wanted a law passed, he would just tell his supporters to issue a “Senatorial Decree.” Furthermore, Caesar addresses the Senate like a King addressing his subjects. He would require the Senate to stand, while he sat before them. Cicero was popular with the common people as well so the Plebeian council approved anything he suggested.
