Conservative Senator: Festus
My name is Festus. I came from a wealthy family and joined the senate when I was 25 years old in 61 B.C and became one of the 300 senators of Roman Republic. In 59 B.C, Julius Caesar and Marcus Brutus became the consul through the sordid election because of bribery. The end of Roman Republic was coming to the end gradually since then. Later, Pompey, Crassus and Caesar, the most wealthy and powerful people dominated Rome through the political alliance. I began worry about the authority of senate; there was not a lot real power under senate’s control. Soon, Caesar gained influence over the Senate through Pompey and Crassus. I started following Cato the Younger, he was a great politician and oppose corruption. Cato became consul in 54 BC, which is when triumvirate broke up. We planed out deepening the conflicts between Caesar and Pompey. In 49BC, Caesar's army crosses the Rubicon and Civil War begins between Caesar and the Republican forces of Pompey. The triumvirate only has Julius Caesar remain. But there were many things we didn't expect, Julius Caesar was victorious, became "dictator in perpetuity" of the Roman Republic and then conquered Gaul. Senate should fight for survival, otherwise the Roman Republic cannot exist any more. Some of the senators believed Caesar will become the king of Rome very soon and endorsed him. But others like me, opposed Caesar in secret. By the lead of Gaius Cassius Longinus and Marcus Junius Brutus, including me there were more than 60 senators joined this assassination. Caesar was stabbed 23 times in senates. Julius Caesar was a great man, he fight bravely and conquered lots of territories for Rome. But he wanted to change Roman Republic to Roman Empire, sorry you just can't. Rome should belong to all the citizens rather than only one man.
